Luxury on the Loire: Le Manoir Les Minimes
Written on November 6, 2007
France is universally recognized as a capital of old world elegance, gastronomic delights, cultural wonders and unparalleled sights. All are well represented in a region southwest of Paris, along the banks of a dreamlike river rich in history. This is the Loire Valley, the fabled land of medieval châteaux and classically fine wines—a must for every sophisticated traveler. It is also home to one of the most stylish and luxurious hotels you will ever have the pleasure to visit.
Situated on the edge of the Loire River in the pleasant town of Amboise, Le Manoir Les Minimes is an 18th-century estate restored in grand style by owners Eric Deforges and Patrice Longet. The result is much more than a hotel—it is an experience that embodies the very best qualities of the Loire region. From the moment your car’s GPS announces, “Destination reached,” and you take your first view of Le Manoir’s spectacular exterior, you know a wonderful stay is in store. Enter through a gateway into the private gravel-encrusted courtyard and make your way past delicately manicured hedges to the terraced main entrance, where you will be warmly welcomed by caretaker and defacto concierge Pierre; and, if you’re lucky, by the oft-napping Olga, the resident dog of the manor. Take a moment to admire the checkerboard-tiled reception hall and the plush lounge beyond before being led up the spiral staircase to your room, where more marvels await.
Le Manoir houses 15 rooms in all, each one decorated with its own unique color scheme and décor sure to please even the most discerning guest. Whether your stay is in a deluxe chambre for two or one of the hotel’s suites, their spacious interiors and practical layouts provide comfort and ambiance. My own experience was a charming mélange of Louis XVI antiques, tasteful orange-yellow silk bedding and a comfortable seating area complete with cozy loveseat and flat screen TV—a perfect balance between classical style and modern elegance. To top it all off, my room featured an awe-inspiring panoramic view [pictured] of the Loire River from its many sun-soaked windows.
You may well choose to lounge around in your terry-cloth robe and while away the days in luxurious comfort. But if you can tear yourself away from Le Manoir, you will find it is also convenient for exploring the Old Town, a five-minute walk from the property. Wander the pedestrian zone amid quaint shops, brasseries and exceptional patisserie/chocolatiers. You can visit nearby Renaissance-age manor Clos Lucé and the famous Château d’Amboise, where a memorable son-et-lumiere (sound and light) display can be seen by night. Or, if the lure of grander castles overtakes you, Le Manoir makes an ideal base for day trips to the local vineyards and regal châteaux of neighboring Blois, Chambord, and magical Chenonceau—where resides the fairy-tale castle that inspired Perrault’s Sleeping Beauty.
For dinner, gracious Pierre is always on hand to reserve a table for you at one of the excellent restaurants that lie just a stone’s throw away, such as the exquisite Le Choiseul. Afterward, have a mint, left on your pillows by the stellar night turn-down service, as you browse the next day’s weather forecast.
Before you turn in to a wonderful night’s sleep, though, you may want to linger in the lounge downstairs, strike up a chat with another satisfied patron or sip a glass of wine on the garden terrace. Come morning, treat yourself to a filling petit déjeuner surrounded by antique silverware and fixtures in the hotel’s delightful breakfast room.
Perhaps best of all, Le Manoir Les Minimes offers such decadence at bourgeois prices, effectively off-setting the relative strength of the Euro for American travelers. The most arduous part of your stay will be the sadly inevitable check-out and departure, when you’ll no doubt look back longingly at the façade of the manor, vowing one day to return.
